Writer’s Journal: Deadlines

Welcome back to Austen Promises and the Writer’s Journal!

Deadlines are on my mind today, as I have missed a self-imposed one and if I don’t get cracking, I’ll miss the next. I failed to meet it due to having eight days of guests, so it’s excusable, even if it is frightening.

Being self-published, I don’t answer to anyone else. This means that I can sit here and watch deadlines go past with little consequence … except that of my funds being very slim when royalty day rolls around.

As some of my readers already know, I dislike setting deadlines anyway. I rarely am finished with anything on the day assigned, and setting a date to have a book completed frightens the bejeebers out of me.

I have had deadlines at other jobs … and have crammed to get everything complete in the last day or two before it was due. Often, I’d have to ask for an extension, because of course, if I’m trying to get something done “on time,” I’m going to get sick. (Sense the sarcasm there?)

I know that many writers, traditionally published ones, in particular, have deadlines they must meet. I feel for them, really I do. I can’t imagine the stress they are under. I have a very good indie author friend who sets dates and generally manages to keep to her deadlines. She also works on three titles at once, each in a different stage of production. I tell her all the time that I’m in awe of her.

I really have tried to write to a deadline. Honest, I have. It just never worked out.

And, now that I have wasted a day on a disappointing eclipse, I shall go back to the story that I really, really, really need to get finished!

Come back next Wednesday for another peek into my journal! <3
