Welcome back to Austen Promises!
This excerpt is not the next scene from last week’s, but part of a scene further along in the story. Being a pantser, I have no idea where we are going here. Not yet, anyway. 🙂 It’ll all work out in the end, though … it always does! 😉
“They are the picture of happiness,” Darcy observed as he followed her lead and watched the Bingleys chat quietly together.
“They are. They are perfectly matched; two peas in a pod.” Elizabeth smiled brightly. “My father says they are so easy their servants will cheat them.”
Darcy chuckled. “They are both very obliging. It is a wonder any decisions at all get made.”
Elizabeth joined him in his laughter, and he was struck once more by the warmth of the sound. I could become accustomed to hearing it every day.
Darcy found it difficult to pull his eyes away from Elizabeth. She fascinated him, and where upon first glance she was not the beauty her sister was, Darcy found that Elizabeth’s fine eyes and ready smile improved her features. Her manners so far had been impeccable. Certainly her personality warmed the atmosphere of the room. He had not been so captivated by a woman since before his father had passed away. He was drawn from his wandering thoughts when his companion asked about his family.
“I have a sister, Georgiana. She is more than ten years my junior. At present, she is with her companion at the home of a friend from school. My parents are both dead; Mother died when my sister was a baby and Father just five years ago. This is my first Christmas alone.”
“How very sad to have lost your parents so young, and to be left alone at such a joyous time of the year. I am happy Bingley invited you. No one should be alone at Christmas.”
Darcy looked into Elizabeth’s eyes, immersing himself in their sparkling and inviting depths. “As am I,” he whispered.
Elizabeth was mesmerized by the intensity of Mr. Darcy’s stare. She found that she wished to know everything about him, and wondered what he thought of her.
“Bingley indicated your estate is called Pemberley?” When Darcy nodded his assent, she continued, “Where is it located?”
I’d love to hear what you think! Please consider leaving me a comment! 🙂
