“I am,” Elizabeth declared, seating herself at the table with a smile. She watched Darcy go back to the sideboard and prepare himself a plate, then bring it back to the table. Once he had seated himself beside her and taken up his fork, Elizabeth began to eat, as well.
Soon after, Jane and Bingley arrived at the breakfast room together. Greeting their guests, they also prepared plates of food. Elizabeth was amused at the way they anticipated each other’s wishes and shared the duty of filling the plates.
Conversation was quiet as the group broke their fast, and focused largely on plans for the morning.
“I must meet with the gentlemen of the neighborhood this morning,” Bingley began. “There is talk of another militia unit camping in the area. You are welcome to join me, Darcy. I am certain you would have something valuable to say.”
Darcy, who would rather spend his morning getting to know Miss Bennet, was noncommittal about joining in. He sipped his coffee, hoping the conversation would move on. It did.
“I must meet with the housekeeper this morning and go over the accounts.” Jane looked at her sister. “I know that you have books enough to keep you busy all morning. Promise me you will stay in and read?”
“Jane.” Elizabeth sighed. She had hoped to sneak in a walk through the gardens today.
“Promise me, Lizzy. You are not recovered enough to traipse all over the estate, not to mention the neighborhood.” Jane was noted for being serene; what few realized was that when she believed she was right, she was quite firm and unyielding. In this instance, she intended to carry her point.
Recognizing the care and worry in her sister’s words, Elizabeth conceded. “Very well, Sister. I will remain within today. However, I should like to walk the halls, if you and Bingley do not mind.”
I’d love to hear what you think! Please consider leaving me a comment! 🙂
